At RideSmart, we keep things simple, supportive, and beginner-friendly. Whether you’ve never touched a motorcycle or you’re returning after a long break, our instructors guide you step-by-step through the essential skills you need to ride safely in Queensland.

The Q-Ride Pre-Learner Course is the first official step towards earning your Motorcycle Learner Licence (RE-L). This 2-day course builds your confidence, develops your road awareness, and prepares you for the TMR Motorcycle Knowledge Test and Hazard Perception Test.

You’ll learn in a safe, relaxed environment with experienced instructors who make the process clear, enjoyable, and stress-free.

Important Booking Information

Pre-Learner Weekday Schedule
Day 1: Monday – Friday
Day 2: Monday – Friday
Day 1 and Day 2 can be booked either on consecutive days or split across different weekdays. Day 2 must be completed within 30 days of Day 1 as per government requirements. RideSmart recommends completing Day 2 within 14 days of Day 1 to maximise information retention, reinforce key safety skills, and ensure you get the most out of the second day.

If you’re ready to begin your motorcycle journey, your first step is completing the 2-day Q-Ride Pre-Learner Course with RideSmart.

Eligibility

To enrol, you must have held your Provisional or Open Car Licence for at least 1 year. Check your eligibility HERE.

What happens during the Pre-Learner (RE-L) Course

Designed so learner licence applicants gain basic riding knowledge and motorcycle handling skills in a safe environment before riding on the road,
Consists of basic sequence of activities, from simple to more complex skill development,
Competency based; participants must demonstrate all competencies to successfully complete the course.

Course Structure

The course runs over two days, both of which must be completed within 30 days of each other.
We recommend completing Day 2 within 14 days of Day 1 to maximise information retention, reinforce key safety skills, and ensure you get the most out of the second day.

🏁 After Pre-Learner Course Motorcycle Knowledge Test

Next Step: Motorcycle Knowledge Test

Once you’ve completed the 2-day Pre-Learner Course, your next step is to sit the Motorcycle Knowledge Test with the Department of Transport.

The test contains 30 questions on motorcycle licensing, road rules, and hazard perception, all key knowledge you’ll need for safe riding. You can complete the test online or in person at your nearest Department of Transport office. You can also practise using the official online tool PRACTICE Motorcycle Knowledge Test.

After successfully completing the test, you’ll be issued your Motorcycle Learner Licence (RE-L). You are required to hold your learners licence for a minimum of 90 days. During this learner period, you may ride any Learner Approved Motorcycle, provided you are supervised by someone with a restricted or unrestricted motorcycle licence.

Supervisor Requirements

Your supervisor must have held an open licence for the class of motorcycle you are learning for at least 1 year.
Supervisors cannot be pillion passengers. You may only carry a supervisor if your motorcycle has a sidecar.
If there is no sidecar, your supervisor must supervise from a safe distance on another motorcycle or in another vehicle.

Important Information About Licence Issuing

If your RE learner licence cannot be automatically added online. You will need to apply at a Driver Licence Issuing Centre if:

Your licence is expired or will expire within 6 weeks from the date you pay your test fee, or
You have not had a digital photo and digitised signature taken in the last 9 years.

This ensures your learner period is safe, structured, and supported, giving you the confidence to progress to the next step in your riding journey.

🏁 After Pre-Learner Course Motorcycle Hazard Perception Test

Sharpen Your Awareness: Hazard Perception Test

Before you can progress to the Q-Ride RE Course or take your RE practical riding test, you must pass the Motorcycle Hazard Perception Test (HPT).

All Queensland learner motorcycle licence holders are required to pass this test before upgrading their learner licence. There are no exemptions, so if you are unable to complete the online test, please contact TMR or call 13 23 80 for guidance.

You can take the hazard perception test at any stage during your learner licence period. The test takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes, so ensure you have a reliable internet connection and enough time to complete it in one session.

To access the test, a fee is required, and your access will be valid for up to 12 months.

Note for regional or remote learners: Currently, there is no offline version of the hazard perception test available.

Students Must Bring:

Current drivers licence (physical or digital) and Eligibility Certificate or Interstate/Overseas Eligibility Letter,

*Optional but strongly recommended.

Important: Students arriving without the correct PPE may be refused entry with no refund.

Personal Gear: You’re welcome to bring your own helmet, jacket, and gloves. Many students feel more comfortable using their own gear, and you’re encouraged to do so if you prefer.

Additional Course Information:

Duration: Up to 6.5 hours per day, Day 1 & Day 2
Rider Experience: No prior motorcycle experience is required. However, experience with balance-based activities such as riding a bicycle, dirt bike, scooter, or e-bike is a significant advantage. If you have never ridden anything requiring balance, please contact our office before booking so we can discuss the best next step for your safety and success.
Fitness & Health: Students must be physically and mentally fit to participate in two full days of training. Any medical conditions that could affect riding ability must be disclosed before the course.
Course Activities: Both days are delivered on our private training range only. You will learn and practise essential motorcycle control skills in a safe, structured environment—no on-road riding is included in the Pre-Learner course.

Important Note:
If your licence has been expired, suspended, or cancelled while you are partway through the minimum required holding period (e.g., the 90 days for a Pre-Learner (RE-L) before sitting your RE, or the 2 years for a Restricted (RE) before sitting your R), this will affect your eligibility.

You must contact Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to confirm your new eligibility timeframe before booking. RideSmart cannot override or determine licence timeframes.
