Earning your Restricted (RE) motorcycle licence is an exciting milestone, and RideSmart makes sure you’re fully prepared. Whether you’re building on your learner experience or returning after a break, our expert instructors guide you step-by-step through the skills and knowledge needed to ride safely on Queensland roads.

The Q-Ride RE Course is designed to develop real-world riding skills, boost your confidence, and prepare you for the practical assessment. This course focuses on safe roadcraft, hazard awareness, manoeuvring, and all the key competencies required to ride independently under the RE licence conditions.

🏁 Ready to Ride Unsupervised: RE Course

Ready to Ride Unsupervised: RE Course

Once you’ve completed your Motorcycle Hazard Perception Test and held your RE learner licence for at least 90 days, you’re ready to take the next step: upgrading to your RE provisional (P1, P2) or open licence (O). Check your eligibility HERE.

To do this, you will need to complete the Q-Ride Restricted (RE) Course.

What happens during the RE Course

The 1-day course is designed to test and refine your riding skills under the guidance of our experienced instructors here at RideSmart.
Upon demonstrating your competency, you will receive your Q-Ride competency declaration.

Upgrading your licence

If your Q-Ride competency declaration is recorded online with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, you may be eligible to upgrade your licence online.
If your declaration is issued on paper, or online upgrade isn’t available, you must apply for your class RE provisional or open licence at a Transport and Motoring Customer Service Centre.

Licence conditions

Once upgraded to a restricted (RE O) motorcycle licence, you can ride any Learner Approved Motorcycle unsupervised.
For the first 12 months, you cannot carry a pillion passenger and must maintain zero blood alcohol while riding.
If you wish to upgrade to a full open licence, you must hold your restricted licence for 2 years. However, if you are happy riding LAMS-approved motorcycles, you may remain on your restricted licence indefinitely.

This step completes your journey from learner to fully licensed rider, equipping you with the skills, confidence, and legal approval to enjoy safe motorcycling for years to come.

Our 1-on-1 or small group training sessions are designed to help you develop the critical skills you need for riding independently.
You’ll focus on roadcraft, confidence-building, manoeuvring, and real-world riding situations under the guidance of our expert instructors.
Sessions are tailored to your experience level and learning pace, so you can progress at a comfortable, safe speed.

Breaks:

Morning Break (15 min): 8:45am – 9:00am
Main Break (30 min): 10:45am – 11:15am
Afternoon Break (15 min): 1:30pm – 1:45pm

Break times may vary slightly depending on course flow and safety requirements.

5. Slow riding (Slow Ride: controlling the bike at walking pace. Figure 8’s: low-speed turns with control)
6. Steering and obstacle avoidance (Obstacle avoidance: faster obstacle navigation. Slalom: weaving around obstacles)
7. Curves discussion
8. Controlled ‘quick stop’ braking (Braking to a point: smooth stopping with downshift. Emergency braking: stop quickly & safely with full control)
9. Simulated road ride

🏁 Course Cost & Gear Provided

RESTRICTED LICENCE (RE)
Price: $280 on weekdays | $300 on weekends

RideSmart Provides (at no charge):

Motorcycle
Helmet
Gloves
Jacket
Wet weather jacket & pants

Students Must Bring:

Current driver licence (physical or digital) and eligibility certificate or interstate/international eligibility letter
Long pants
Enclosed shoes
Water, snacks, and lunch*
Sunscreen*

*Optional but strongly recommended.

Important: Students arriving without the correct PPE may be refused entry with no refund.

Personal Gear: You’re welcome to bring your own helmet, jacket, and gloves. Many students feel more comfortable using their own gear, and you’re encouraged to do so if you prefer.

Course Requirements

Duration: Up to 8 hours, including a 2-hour on-road ride.
Rider Experience: Students must have regular experience riding manual motorcycles in mainstream traffic prior to attending the RE course. Competency in cornering, low-speed clutch control, gear changes, and braking is required.
Fitness & Health: Students must be physically and mentally fit to complete an intensive day of riding. Any medical conditions that could affect riding ability must be disclosed before the course.
Course Activities: A mix of range exercises and on-road riding to develop real-world skills, hazard awareness, and decision-making.

Optional Skill Support

Some students benefit from extra 1-on-1 or small group training prior to the RE course.
