🏁 Next Steps to Your RE Learner Licence (RE-L)

Now that you’ve completed your 2-Day Pre-Learner Course, it’s time to take the next step toward getting your motorcycle licence — the Motorcycle Knowledge Test. This test is completed with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and must be passed before your RE learner licence can be issued.

After You Pass Motorcycle Knowledge Test (MKT)

Once you successfully complete the MKT, TMR will issue your RE Learner Licence (RE-L). Your 90 Days starts AFTER you complete your MKT and TMR issues your licence.

You must hold your RE-L for a minimum of 90 days before progressing further. During this time you may ride a Learner Approved Motorcycle (LAMS), provided you are supervised correctly.

To ride on your learner licence, your supervisor must:

Hold an open RE or R licence for at least 12 months
Supervise from a sidecar, another motorcycle, or another vehicle
Cannot be a pillion passenger on your bike

Your supervisor must always maintain a safe distance and be able to observe your riding.

Important Information About Licence Issuing:

If your RE learner licence cannot be automatically added online. You will need to apply at a Driver Licence Issuing Centre if:

Your licence is expired or will expire within 6 weeks from the date you pay your test fee, or
You have not had a digital photo and digitised signature taken in the last 9 years
If you do not receive confirmation from TMR, you must contact them to ensure your licence has been issued!

Your competency declaration is only valid for 1 year from the date of issue. If you do not take and pass the motorcycle knowledge test and have the RE learner added to your licence within 1 year, it will expire and you will need to do the Q-Ride course again to get a new competency declaration.

🏁 Getting Ready for Your Restricted Licence (RE)

You can book your RE (Restricted) Course in advance, even if you haven’t yet held your RE-L for 90 days, as long as you will meet the requirement 24 hours before your course date.

To successfully complete the RE course, you must:

✔ Hold your RE-L for at least 90 days by the day of your course
✔ Complete the Motorcycle Hazard Perception Test before your course day

⚠ You MUST complete the Hazard Perception Test before your RE course day or you will lose your fees.

Helpful Tip!

We strongly recommend completing the Hazard Perception Test as soon as you can. Waiting can lead to delays or forgetting to complete it altogether. Doing it early helps you stay on track, book your RE course sooner, and get the most out of your training.

🏁 RE Training & Practice Options

We strongly recommend additional training if you’d like to build confidence and refine your riding skills before attending your RE course.
RideSmart’s 1-on-1 Private Training and Group Training Sessions are designed to support skill development in a safe and structured environment.

Group Training focuses on:
– Slow riding & figure 8
– Braking & cornering techniques
– Roadcraft & hazard awareness
– On-road preparation
1-on-1 Private Training Sessions focuses on:
– Train directly with one of our experienced instructors in a fully tailored session,
– Focus on your individual goals or challenges
– Receive targeted feedback and hands-on guidance
– Progress at your own pace in a relaxed, supportive setting

• Group Training Sessions (Range or Road) – $99 weekday / $120 weekend
• 1-on-1 Private Lessons (Range or Road) – $150 weekday / $200 weekend
